NetShade is an app for Mac OS X and iOS which provides access to anonymous proxy and VPN servers. These servers include public HTTP/HTTPS proxies, as well as Rayner Software's own subscription-based proxies. NetShade's VPN servers run IPSec, and the proxy servers act using the HTTP/HTTPS web proxy standard.

NetShade version 1.0 was released in 2004 for Mac OS X. The first version had no subscription-based proxy service, only a listing of public proxies. A dedicated NetShade proxy server was added for version 2.0 in 2005. Version 3, released in 2007, added a second NetShade proxy server, providing presence in both the US and UK. The current version, 7.0.1, includes dedicated proxy servers in the US, Canada, UK, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. It can be used to circumvent Internet censorship, or to experience what censorship is like in other countries such as China.

NetShade (v.4.0.1) makes your presence on the web anonymous by routing your connection through a proxy server and acting as the middle-man in your connection. The proxy server is the only one making connections to the sites you visit, and only the proxy’s IP address is seen by those sites.
After you enter the code, you might be told to configure you browser (in my case, Firefox) so that it can work with NetShade.

Direct Connection is chosen by default – that means that you’re visiting the websites from your own IP address. You can test and verify your connection:
Choose a public proxy by clicking on the small downward facing arrow on the “Public Proxy” button:
As with the direct connection, you can test and verify it. Of course, there is no guarantee that all of the public proxy servers will work or be accessible every time.

To additionally check that your computer is showing the proxy IP address to the websites, use a free online service for IP checking:
